As WW2 rages around the world, DCS Foyle fights his own war on the home-front as he investigates crimes on the south coast of England. Foyle's War opens in southern England in the year 1940. Later series sees the retired detective working as an MI5 agent operating in the aftermath of the war.
2002
May 1940. At a time when German nationals are being interned in British camps, the beautiful Austrian wife of a local magistrate is resented by the locals. When she is found murdered, a swastika painted on a nearby tree, Foyle realizes the seemingly peaceful Sussex town harbors any number of suspects.
May 1940. The arrest of a young girl on a sabotage charge brings Foyle into contact with a group of English Nazi sympathizers. Shots are fired at the group's charismatic leader, but it is the hotel owner who dies. Foyle investigates the murder and uncovers a plot to smuggle a vitally important letter to the enemy.
June 1940. A conscientious objector dies in police custody, setting in motion a series of suspicious deaths and a complicated puzzle for Foyle. When Foyle has pieced together the truth, the entry of Italy into the war engulfs a close friend in tragedy.
August 1940. In the course of investigating a murder, Foyle uncovers a plot to steal art treasures being moved from the local museum to Wales for safekeeping. Meanwhile, Foyle's son flies his first mission as a Royal Air Force pilot and is accused of passing top-secret information to the enemy.

September 1940. Sam's boarding house is bombed and valuables disappear, alerting Foyle to an organized ring of looters. After the father of one of the suspected looters is found dead on the beach, Foyle and Milner's investigation leads them into conflict with the British efforts to the secure the donation of American aid and the crucial start of Lend-Lease in the war.
September 1940. As Foyle's son, Andrew, takes to the skies for dangerous sorties over Germany, Sam goes undercover at a fuel depot to help crack an illicit fuel racket. Sexual indiscretions and racketeering, plus links to Andrew, combine to make this a delicate case for Foyle.

February 1941. Still trying to get closer to the war effort, Foyle asks his well-connected brother-in-law to help him get a job with a naval command center. Meanwhile, a local murder investigation puts him in a dangerous bind between rival spy agencies.
February 1941. Foyle investigates strange happenings at a manor house that has been converted into a burn unit for RAF pilots. The brilliant but unconventional surgeon who heads the unit has drawn the ire of his military superiors for disregarding regulations that conflict with patient welfare.

April 1942. Cultures clash as the first Americans arrive to build an airfield near Hastings. Some locals see the "invaders" as a threat. Others find the chance for romance among the young GIs. But when a barmaid turns up strangled, Foyle's investigation strains British-American relations to the breaking point.
August 1942. Helping a colleague from a nearby town probe the murder of a war hero, Foyle confronts a deeper - and potentially deadlier - mystery. A top-secret experiment in biological warfare goes horribly wrong, claiming the victim's widow and threatening the life of Foyle's driver.
October 1940. At the London headquarters of a multinational company, a young secretary plummets to her death. In Hastings, a member of the Home Guard is killed. Foyle and Milner discover how these deaths are linked and how money talks a universal language, even in wartime.
October 1940. London is in the grip of the Blitz. In Hastings, the disappearance of a young boy and a break-in at the local food depot lead Foyle and his team to a "funk hole," a hotel catering to wealthy guests seeking a wartime retreat. There they discover a nest of cowardice, greed, and deceit.
April 1941. Foyle and Milner capture two German soldiers who survived the crash landing of their plane in the Hastings countryside. Nearby, two nights later, a farmer is discovered shot dead in his armchair. Two Land Army girls working on the farm come under suspicion.
June 1941. In a month that begins with the fall of Crete and ends with the German invasion of the Soviet Union, Foyle and Milner crack down on an organized crime racket operating in a local shipyard. Foyle is also ordered to keep an eye on a known communist agitator visiting Hastings with his fiancé.

The apparently accidental death of a young woman in a munitions factory becomes linked with the murder of Milner's estranged wife as he falls under suspicion.
Foyle has his hands full dealing with illegal gambling, sabotage, and his needy goddaughter who shows up on his doorstep with her traumatized son.

Fresh from a stay in America, Foyle encounters MI5 agents Hilda Pierce and Arthur Valentine, who draw him into the hunt for a suspected Russian spy ring. As part of his investigation, Foyle reconnects with Sam, now working for a nuclear scientist and married to political candidate Adam Wainwright.
Looking into the deaths of several high-ranking Russian defectors, Foyle finds ties to the apparent suicide of an unidentified Russian man and the disappearance of a young woman. His search leads him to a government listening station that may not be what it appears.
When an MI5 intelligence asset fears for his life, Foyle must protect the ex-Nazi from assassination attempts - and American authorities. Meanwhile, a new MP Adam tries to help a farmer reclaim his land and uncovers information that could threaten his career.

August 1945. Foyle probes the mysterious motives of James Devereaux, a former POW and member of the British Free Corps, who refuses to defend himself against treason charges. Meanwhile, Milner investigates the murder of a young woman rooming with the Devereaux family's housekeeper.

A university professor who had been working as a translator at the Nuremberg trials is stabbed to death. As Foyle investigates, he delves into the world of international oil politics and corrupt Nazi businessmen. Sam assists the murder inquiry by going undercover, despite her pregnancy.
As Britain debates the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine, the son of a wealthy Jewish businessman is assaulted. The flames of anti-Semitism have recently been fanned in London by Charles Lucas, a right-wing writer, and Foyle suspects the attack was racially motivated.
After an attempt on Hilda Pierce's life, Foyle scrutinizes her work for the Special Operations Executive during the war. Could this be related to the deaths of nine SOE agents in France and rumors of a traitor called Plato?

April 1944. DS Milner's investigation of a transportation fraud sets in a motion a series of events that brings Foyle back to the force. As Hastings hosts an ecumenical conference on the morality of continued Allied bombing, Foyle probes the suspicious death of a young cartographer from the Air Ministry office.
October 1944. At a psychiatric clinic treating troubled soldiers, the investigation of a doctor's murder turns up no shortage of suspects among the patients and staff. It also complicates Foyle's friendship with Dr. Josef Novak, the Polish refugee who heads the clinic.
May 1945. As all of Britain awaits the formal announcement of the war's end, Foyle reluctantly joins a committee preparing to keep public order during the celebration to come. But the end comes too soon for two men - one a stabbing victim, the other an apparent suicide.
