In 1984 hip-hop is introduced in Norway through the movie "Beat Street". A few years later the hip-hop scene is almost gone. In the nineties politicians go to war against graffiti. But the winds are changing and in 1998 norwegian rap rules the charts.
For a long time rapping in the norwegian language was considered unthinkable and rapping in the mother tongue was ridiculized. But through artists such as Tungtvann, Jaa9 and OnklP and Lars Vaular, rapping in norwegian finally gets a huge breakthrough.
No other genre has more internal conflicts than rap. Why is it so important to claim you are the best rapper? Why did OnklP and Karpe Diem have a beef? Is conflict a bad thing or can it ultimately lead to something positive?
Rap has moved from the small basements of Norway to sold out arenas. How did Norwegian rappers end up as idols and what does the future look like for Norwegian hip-hop?
